Most of us have found ourselves in this scenario: a workmate comes to your desk, drops what appears to be a phone-book-size stack of documents—well, maybe not that much but it can sure seem like it—and lets you know that your team needs to understand their contents… by this afternoon.

So that may be a bit of a dramatization, but the reality is we often have more to read and comprehend than we have the time to do so. Imagine having an assistant that could instantly read everything for you and present an accurate, easily-digested summary of all the most critical pieces of information. Oh, and your assistant never sleeps and can process as many documents (phone book sized or otherwise) as you need in a given day. Wouldn’t that be nice?

That, in effect, is exactly what the Xerox Summarizer App does. Let’s see how it works:

ai powered document summariesXerox is Harnessing the Power of AI to Summarize Documents

The Xerox Summarizer App takes a document and automatically generates a summary for you, pulling out all the critical pieces of information and leaving out the fluff. The app accomplishes this through the use of some pretty impressive AI (and if it’s this good now, we can’t help but wonder what things will be like in a decade!).

Documents can be directly scanned in, but you’re also free to choose any document stored on the local device, network, or cloud storage system. This is a great way to catch up on any lingering documents you’ve needed to review in a fraction of the time.

How Well Does the Xerox Summarizer App Work?

In our hands-on tests, the Summarizer App works very well. The success of how useful the summaries are relies a lot on your choice of summary style and how picky you are about the presentation. We’ll explain.

The app has two different kinds of summary styles, abstracted and extractive. Extractive summaries aim to pull out all the critical pieces of information from the original document without changing any words. The flow of the final summary may suffer a bit in terms of ease of readability, but the goal of an extractive summary is to do exactly that: extract all the useful bits of information. This style is best for documents where specific terms are important and shouldn’t be changed, and you don’t care about things looking pretty.

Abstracted summaries, however, do allow for the app to replace words. The original meaning and context won’t be lost, but shorter, more concise wording than the original document will be used. If specificity of verbiage isn’t important and you’re just looking for the gist of the document, it’s a great mode to use because it offers better flow and readability.
