Those of us over the age of 35 will almost certainly recall the days when setting up a new printer was a fairly arduous task.
Fortunately, those days are over—Xerox has made set up, configuration, and general use easier than ever before. And now, particularly for organizations without dedicated IT personnel, going through the motions of setting up a new printer is even easier thanks to the Xerox Smart Start installer software.
Today on the Preferred Document Solutions blog, we’ll cover how the Smart Start installer software works, who might want to use it, and what alternatives to driver-based printing exist.
What is the Xerox Smart Start Installer Software & How Does it Work?
The Xerox Smart Start installer software is designed to simplify the installation of a new printer and any necessary drivers on the devices which will be interacting with the printer. In other words, you run the software on a compatible device, and the software handles the rest with a little bit of easy user input.
The Smart Start software provides support for both Microsoft print architectures (Type 3 and Type 4 print systems) and supports Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. The Windows machine and the Xerox printer must be on the same network for the installer software to work. Once you run Smart Start on your Windows Machine, it will scan the local network (the subnet) for any Xerox printers it can find.
Once the software discovers a printer, it will help you configure the Windows machine meant to be interacting with the printer, with automatic driver installation and other simple configuration choices.
Xerox Smart Start Software vs. Xerox Cloud Printing Capabilities
In some workplace environments, the Smart Start installer software can be an incredible time saver—installing the correct drivers for your printer can be difficult for some users, and the software is designed to completely mitigate that inconvenience.
However, as you may recall from our post How Cloud-Based Printing Eliminates Reliance on Drivers, published just a few weeks ago, driver-based printing isn’t the only solution available to Xerox users—even on a local network. Cloud-based printing eliminates the need for drivers, instead relying on communicating with the printer via your already-existing cloud platform, such as Google Drive, DropBox, or Office 365.
Which option is best for your office’s needs is up to you, but if you need help figuring out the best way to enjoy reliable, always-available printing without the IT headaches, we’re here to help.
